Robusta vs Arabica: which bean fits the Saudi coffee market?

Saudi Arabia is one of the fastest-growing coffee markets in the region, driven by café culture, a young population and the national push to develop the coffee sector. Roasters and distributors entering it face one early decision that shapes their margins: Robusta or Arabica?

The cost reality

Vietnamese Robusta green beans typically cost a fraction of Arabica. For commercial blends and high-volume espresso, this can be the difference between a sustainable business and a passion project.

Taste and crema

Robusta has roughly twice the caffeine of Arabica, a heavier body, more bitterness and noticeably more crema in espresso, all qualities valued by many customers in the region. Well-processed "fine Robusta" reduces the harsh notes while keeping the strength.

Where Arabica wins

Specialty. If your customers pay for origin stories, cupping scores and light roasts, you need Arabica. Vietnam produces highland Arabica in smaller quantities in the Central Highlands, around Lam Dong, and we source it directly from estates there.

What most Saudi roasters actually do

  • Commercial espresso blends: a Robusta share for body, crema and cost
  • Arabic coffee (qahwa) blends: traditional qahwa is made from very lightly roasted Arabica, but many commercial blends add Robusta to manage cost, and a strong base holds up to cardamom and long brewing
  • Specialty single origins: highland Arabica, smaller volumes, higher margin

The sourcing advantage of buying from Vietnam

Vietnam is the world's number one Robusta producer. Buying direct from Central Highlands farms, with pre-shipment inspection, removes the broker layers that raise prices and blur quality. We do farm visits, sampling and cupping, moisture and defect checks, and export documents. See Vietnamese coffee wholesale.
