You found the factory, agreed the price and approved the sample. Now comes the part that intimidates most first-time Saudi importers: getting the goods from a factory floor in Guangdong to your warehouse in Riyadh or Jeddah.
Sea freight vs air freight vs express
| Mode | Typical transit | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Sea FCL (20ft/40ft container) | About 18–30 days port to port | Full container volume, lowest cost per kilo |
| Sea LCL (shared container) | About 25–40 days incl. consolidation | Smaller orders, mixed suppliers |
| Air freight | About 3–7 days | Urgent, high-value, low-weight goods |
| Express courier | About 3–6 days door to door | Samples and small parcels |
Main Saudi destinations are Jeddah Islamic Port (west), King Abdulaziz Port, Dammam (east), and Riyadh dry port by rail from Dammam.
Incoterms: FOB, CIF or DDP?
- EXW: you collect from the factory. Cheapest quote, but most work and risk for you.
- FOB: the factory delivers to the Chinese port, and you control the freight. Usually the best balance for importers.
- CIF: the factory pays freight and insurance to your port. Convenient, but you don't control the forwarder or the charges at destination.
- DDP: delivered with duties paid. Simple, but check carefully what is included.
The documents you'll need
- Commercial invoice and packing list
- Bill of lading (sea) or airway bill (air)
- Certificate of origin
- SABER certificates for regulated products
- Product-specific certificates where required (e.g. food, cosmetics, electronics)
SASO and SABER: check before production
Saudi Arabia uses the SABER platform for product conformity. Many regulated products need a Product Certificate of Conformity and a Shipment Certificate before customs clearance. Requirements depend on the product category, so check them before production, not after. Changing labels or specs on finished goods is expensive.
What drives the cost
- Container rates, which change with season and global demand (they rise before Chinese New Year and Ramadan)
- Volume and weight: LCL is charged per cubic metre
- Local charges at both ports
- Customs duties and VAT at destination
- Inland delivery to your warehouse
The mistake that costs the most
Leaving shipping to the factory. Factories are not freight forwarders. They book whatever is easiest for them, and you pay for it in delays, wrong documents and surprise fees at destination. A sourcing partner who coordinates freight and paperwork for you removes this risk.
We handle the whole route from the factory to your Saudi port, including export packing, loading supervision and documents.
Frequently asked questions
How long does shipping from China to Saudi Arabia take?
Sea freight is typically about 18–30 days port to port for a full container. LCL takes longer because of consolidation. Air freight takes a few days.
Which is cheaper: FOB or CIF?
CIF looks simpler, but FOB usually gives you more control and fewer surprise charges at destination because you choose the forwarder.
Do I need a SABER certificate?
Only for regulated product categories in Saudi Arabia, but many common products are regulated. Check your HS code before production.
